What To Wear

I often get asked, "What should we wear to our photography session?"  I have a few recommendations, but the very most important thing to remember is to wear what you love and feel comfortable in!  Even if it does not line up with my guidelines.  They are your portraits, so you wear what you want and I will work with it!

My favorite tip: Choose a clothing item or outfit with a few colors in it, and match everyone else to that. This is how I approach dressing my own family for our portraits and it seems to work well when clients follow this guideline.

Everyone's outfit should complement one another and create a look of uniformity - and this can be accomplished without everyone in the same color!  See the examples below.

Rather than one color, choose a color scheme for everyone to wear.  For example:  blues and greens, or jewel tones, or earth tones....the combinations are endless!  Choose colors that flatter your skin tone, or just pick colors you like, or choose colors that would complement the decor in your home where a large family portrait might be displayed.

Layer for color, texture, and interest.

Avoid bold patterns that will distract from the person in the photo (a nice plaid is fine, but large bold stripes might be distracting).  Avoid characters, logos, words, etc.
